Valérie (Valou) Kervyn (Brussels, 1973) discovered her passion for drawing and painting in a workshop she had attended every week since the age of 10. After studying art, she went on to study graphic design at the Ecole de Recherche Graphique (ERG) and the Ecole du 75 (Brussels), followed by evening classes in illustration with Alain Goffin. In 2012, with the creation of an interior design network bringing together artists and craftspeople, she rediscovered her first love, and happily made her way back to her studio. Since then, she has spent her days there, punctuated by colors, materials, movement, research and pleasure.
My artistic approach
Attracted by colors, shapes and textures. Curious about working with different objects and materials. Colors are layered, acrylics are worked with pallets, cardboard, wire, wire mesh… Emotions are stacked, too.
Expressive by nature, coupled with a strong sensitivity, I project the feelings of the moment mixed with the emotions felt during the construction and organization of the canvas in my head. I work in two stages. First I imagine, I dream, and then over time I see it, it comes true, it has to come out… Then I get carried away, gather the material and attack.
It’s like being suspended in time. It’s magical when ideas and feelings become matter, when sand has to be added to the paint to accentuate the movement, when palettes and cardboard filled with colors freely transcribe what has been dreamed, thought and imagined. Sometimes it’s explosive, sometimes more sedate. Techniques vary according to my emotions. But always in color.
