SIEMENS

Growing up in a creative family, Mathijs Siemens (Amsterdam, 1982) was always busy “making things”. During his teenage years, he produced numerous drawings, whose style evolved from street-art to more figurative and surreal drawings. After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts, he became more interested in architectural perspectives and the function of color and depth. Around this time, Mathijs Siemens started working with different materials, such as resin, wood and foam board, and began adding three-dimensional elements to his surrealist works of art. Eventually, the next logical step for him was to free himself from all realistic limitations and take the step towards abstract art.

For several years, he has been developing techniques in which cotton thread is the most important material. By subjecting this fragile thread to maximum tension, he creates strong figurative compositions, where the space between the two-dimensional and the three-dimensional is an exciting field of work. By superimposing layers of thread and playing with lines, colors and relief, he brings his works to life. His aim is clearly to create colorful, positive works. Sometimes with an almost hallucinatory or kinetic effect, often with an architectural layering.

Artist’s statement

“Chaos is not just disorder, it’s a space of potential and creativity from which new things are born. With my colorful work, I’d like to disarm, temporarily break the negativity and discomfort I see around me. To transform the vulnerable thread into a powerful, expressive statement with its own reality.

With my colorful works, I’d like to disarm, temporarily break the negativity and unease I see around me. To transform the vulnerable thread into a powerful, expressive statement with one’s own reality.
In my work, I try to express the complexity in which we live and, at the same time, I feel a constant need to seek a positive vibration. A feast for the eyes, if you like, for myself and for others. It’s not just about what we see on the surface. It’s about what it does to the senses.
For me, the challenge lies in the research, the path to the right composition and the choices you make in the meantime, to find the ideal relationship between colors (contrasts), line play, relief and three-dimensional layers. Try to get out of the “realistic bubble” and see things without visual limitations. You’re actually working on a state of mind where inspiration and creativity flow naturally.

It’s a great feeling!”
