GARAU

Toni Garau (Sóller, 1974) is a visual artist who began his professional career as a graphic and industrial designer. His first exhibition was at the Can Prunera Modernist Museum (Sóller), and from then on he began working with various galleries and curators around the world, including Belgium, Switzerland, Japan and Dubai. Majorca, his native land where he does most of his artistic work, is imprinted in blue in his heart and mind. His work reinterprets the use of a historic Majorcan material, thread, to evoke the island’s history and bring it to the public’s attention.

The artist is deeply linked to the history of his village, Sóller, which developed a major textile industry in the early 20th century, revolutionizing the progress of his small community. For this reason, Garau’s first artistic period revolved around the inspiration that these historical events triggered in him. The yarns used in his work are intentionally sourced from the village’s old mills, as a tribute to the work carried out by the workers of the time.

Sóller’s former textile industry paved the way for the emancipation of local women. Working in the textile mill meant experiencing, for the first time and at first hand, what it meant to belong and contribute to the community. The women’s revolution in Sóller’s textile industry at the end of the 19th century is a key element for Toni Garau and her work. It is the main source of inspiration for her creative process.
