Volcanic manifestations – powers both magnificent and terrifying – have fascinated mankind since the dawn of time. Lava eruptions have shaped our landscapes over millions of years: a pure act of nature’s creation. My research into volcanoes attempts to fuse the action of nature and that of man in a work that combines the power of a basalt shard, the memory of an eruption, and the mobility of a bronze casting inspired by the flow of lava.

The story begins in the mountains or along a river, in search of a volcanic stone. The choice is made by intuition. Nature inspires and accompanies the creation.

Then comes the cutting of the stone. A dialogue of lines, curves and chamfers begins, like a stroll through the material. A mineral landscape takes shape.

The foundry work then mobilizes technical knowledge and intuition. It’s a question of orienting the casting while allowing the bronze to escape randomly around the stone. Giving the molten metal enough freedom to escape and solidify imitates nature’s act of creation, irresistible yet random.

The result is a timeless work of volcanic art, a symbiosis between a stone millions of years old and the instantaneity of a bronze casting. A work frozen in a moment of eternity.
